Donnie Darko is a true gem. It’s one of those movies that comes along and you are just inspired by it. It makes you want to create something as fresh and unique as it is. It makes you want to go and try something new, because you never know what you’ll just might find if you just look in a different place or at a different angle. Donnie Darko was directed and penned by first timer Richard Kelly. He received much critical praise and acclaim for his efforts on Donnie Darko, and has gone on to write and direct two other feature films to mixed reviews. Donnie Darko remains his best work, and deservedly so. It is a dark drama dealing with life, love, and the intricate consequences of all of our actions all in the package of not your ordinary human drama. One of the main themes is science fiction involving time travel or inter-dimensionality.
　The titular character is played by Jake Gyllenhaal, in one of his first starring rolls. Donnie is a troubled teen plagued by psychotic episodes of sleepwalking and depression and as such is medicated. The movie starts off with Donnie being awaken on a golf course because he had been sleepwalking again. During his sleepwalking dream, he had heard a voice tell him that the world would end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. His sleepwalking and delusional episodes are becoming worse and worse. Now he is not only hearing voices, he is seeing a man in a strange rabbit costume, named Frank, telling him to do things and discussing time travel with Donnie. Because of this mysterious character, Donnie himself, become interested in time travel and seeks out the school science teacher’s opinion about it. The teacher gives him a book about time travel that was written by the infamous grandma death—an old widowed woman in town known for her crazy behavior.
 Frank had been telling Donnie to do what seemed to be bad things, but in a strange twist everything Donnie had done, had some sort of positive outcome. But this is when things come to a head. Donnie has seemed to uncover the mystery of everything and has to make a very tough decision.
  I think one of the most defining moments of this film is the one of Donnie and his sister’s Halloween party. Donnie is at his happiest; he is surrounded by his friends, family, and his new girlfriend. All throughout the film we are treated to the perfect 80s soundtrack and this scene’s music takes the cake. It’s Joy Division’s, Love Will Tear Us Apart. Because of this movie, every time I hear that song, I cannot help but think of that scene. At the party Donnie becomes aware of the force that controls everything and follows it. He is lead to his girlfriend and then they seem to consummate their relationship. But it is all cut too short we Donnie realizes that the time of 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds is almost upon them. That’s when everything must be decided by Donnie.
 How about Donnie’s decision, do you think he made the right one? Would you have done anything different?

Justin’s Point of the Day

As I was only 7 years only when this film was supposed to take place, I think that the school scenes and house party scenes are a very good representation of what it’s like to be a teenager in the suburbs in America. I’m not sure much about being teenager changed besides styles and musical tastes. Having grown up in the suburbs in America myself, it is really easy to affirm with movies and TV that takes place in them, no matter what the era. The main idea of a suburb is the rows and rows of houses and only houses. This maybe hard for someone in Japan to envision, but a middle class housing development in American can be 2 to 3 square kilometers, in some cases even larger, of nothing but houses. There are no shops or stores allowed in these areas, only houses for living. Anyone who has grown up in one of these areas can immediately identify one of these areas.
 Growing up in one of these areas shapes you in a certain way, as I am sure that growing up in a heavily populated city center would shape you in another certain way. When you watch this movie, think back to your childhood. How were the housing area, school, and house party scenes different than what you experienced when you were growing up and in your high school years?

私が7歳の時にこの映画が公開されたと思うが、学校やハウスパーティーのシーンはアメリカの郊外に住む若者を上手く描いていると思う。今のティーンエイジャーが好むスタイルや音楽は昔と変わってしまったが、それ以外はあまり変わっていないのではないかと思う。まさに郊外で育った私には、郊外を舞台にした映画やテレビは、たとえそれがいつの時代であっても容易に理解することができる。郊外と言えば家、家、家、どこまで行っても家しかないイメージだろう。おそらく日本に住んでいると想像できないだろうが、アメリカの中流階級は家だけで2～3平方キロメートル、またはそれ以上の区画がある。店を出すことが禁止されている、まさに家だけの地区だ。このような土地で育ってきた人はすぐに郊外を見分けることができる。
　このような土地で育つと、その土地特有の個性が形成されていく。人口密集地で育った人と考え方が違っているように。この映画を観て、あなたの子供時代を思い出してください。郊外の家並み、学校、ハウスパーティーのシーンはあなたが過ごした時代と違っていましたか？
                     　　　     

How do you feel about villains and heroes? Is the main character always a good person? Watching this movie might change your opinion.

In Bruges

The movie for this weeks recommendation is 2008’s In Bruges. It is an extremely dark, black comedy/drama starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes. The story in reality is anything but funny and the main characters would be villains in real life. All three leads deliver a great performance, with Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes delivering memorable ones. The film was nominated for a number of awards that year, complete with a nomination at the Academy Awards for best picture. It did not win, but Colin Farrell won Best Actor in a Comedic Roll at the Golden Globes. Even though it has garnered such high critical praise and fair share of press, it languishes in obscurity. I believe it is due to the gritty subject matter and violence used as comedic gags. However, this is a film that is meant to be watched and enjoyed as fiction. So please do the same.
　The main character, played by Colin Farrell, is Ray. He is a young hitman who manages to mess up his first job very badly and an innocent boy gets killed. Ray and his partner Ken, played by Brendan Gleeson, are sent to Bruges in Brussels by their boss Harry, played by Ralph Fiennes, to wait until the heat dies down. Well that’s what he tells Ray away. Harry really sent him to Bruges to spend his last couple of living days in a fairy tale style city. He has ordered Ken to kill Ray because he doesn’t want to have his hitmen killing innocent children all the time bringing more attention to the murders than they already receive.
　The main fly in the ointment, is that Ken has taken a real liking to Ray and tells him of their boss’s orders. He tells Ray to quit the business, leave town, and to never show his face back home again, and that he’ll deal with Harry when the time comes. Only Ray being Ray, ends up messing that up too, which leads to a gun battle confrontation in the beautiful city of Bruges
　The film has many unexpected events, reactions, and situations, which lead to many laugh out loud moments. These are all things that would never ever happen in normal real life, so you can fell comfortable in laughing at them.
　Did you end up liking Ray? If Ray was a real person, how would you feel about him? Do you think this movie changed your views on bad people?
　I ended up really liking Ray and Ken, and to some extent, even Harry. They were very well written and acted characters, so I think it is next to impossible to not like them. In this movie we are in the world of bad people, this being the case, we end up putting the traditional label of hero on Ray. But in the end, I think Ray really grew as a person in this movie and maybe able to reform himself. 　

   Justin’s Point of the Day

This is a British film, however it is not lost on an American audience. American audiences tend to dislike movies that are not American in origin. Even though the movie is in English, if it is not an American movie, they may forego seeing it. This is one reason why Hollywood is so eager to remake foreign films. In this movie, the cast is mostly made up of Hollywood veterans, so that helped in gaining some recognition in the States.
　The themes are universal and straight forward, however audacious they may be. The film epitomizes the British dry sense of humor with undertones of American slapstick humor throughout. The slapstick humor is very dark and often involves more pain or even worse than your average American slapstick humor though. Most of the timing of the gags are so perfect so that you will either physically cringe in agony or burst out laughing in uneasy disbelief. These are all signs of a masterfully crafted black comedy. But there are always the more serious undertones of a heavy drama ever present.
　An example of dry British humor would be the banter Ray has with everyone he meets, but that is juxtaposed with American slapstick humor with his actions towards those people.
　Laughing out loud at a film is very western, but it’s also very cathartic to do so. This is a film where you may feel ashamed in doing so, because of the sensitive subject matter. But, I think that it is also the perfect film to do so at, because of the absolute craziness and outlandish scenes.

今週のおすすめは『ヒットマンズ・レクイエム』（2008年）です。主演はコリン・ファレル、ブレンダン・グリーソン、ラルフ・ファインズで、とてもブラックなコメディ／ドラマです。実際には物語は可笑しいだなんてとんでもない、主な登場人物が実在したら悪者たちです。三人は好演技をみせていて、コリン・ファレル、ラルフ・ファインズの演技は心に残ります。作品はその年の多くの賞の他、アカデミー賞最優秀作品賞にノミネートされました。アカデミー賞は逃しましたが、コリン・ファレルはゴールデングローブ賞コメディ部門の最優秀演技賞を受賞しました。このように高い称賛を得、かなり記事になったにもかかわらず、この作品はあまり知られていません。コメディギャグとして、実際には不愉快な主題と暴力が用いられているからだと私は思います。ですが、これはフィクションとして見て楽しまれていい作品なのです。ですからそんなふうに見てみてください。

　作品には予期しない出来事、アクションや状況が満載で、何度も大笑いを誘います。普通の生活では絶対に起こりっこないことだから、あなたは安心してそれを笑っていられるのです。

これはイギリス映画ですが、アメリカでも観られています。アメリカの観客は、もともとアメリカ映画でない作品を嫌う傾向があります。たとえ英語の作品だとしても、アメリカ映画でないならば、アメリカの観客は見るのをやめるかもしれません。これがハリウッドがあんなに外国作品をリメイクしたがる一つの理由です。配役はほとんどがハリウッドのベテラン陣で、この作品が米国である程度認められたことに一役かっています。
　大胆不敵にも、主題は普遍的で単刀直入です。作品は終始一貫アメリカのスラップスティック*のユーモアを感じさせながら、イギリスのさりげないユーモアを典型的に表しています。けれども作中のスラップスティックのユーモアはとても暗くて、よくあるアメリカのそれよりもずっと痛みを引き起こす、いやそれ以上です。たいていギャグのタイミングが抜群なので、あなたは痛みに体がすくんだり、ありえないと思いながらも笑いだすでしょう。これが見事に作られたブラックコメディの証なんですね。そして重々しいドラマの存在をひしひしと感じさせるのです。
　気のいいレイが会う人ごとに交わす冗談は、イギリスのさりげないユーモアの一例でしょう。しかし、人びとに向けられるレイの行為はアメリカのスラップスティックのユーモアで、この二つは同時に並べられているのです。

Groundhog Day

 For today, I will be talking about the 1993 romantic comedy Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, and directed by Harold Ramis. It’s one of my personal favorites, due to the interesting and engaging premise, the clever and witty dialogue, and what seems to be the perfect casting. If you don’t like romantic comedies, don’t worry, because I guarantee you will be thoroughly entertained.

Bill Murray is the lead character named Phil Connors, who is an egotistical weather man for a big city television station. He gets assigned a new producer Rita, played by Andie MacDowell, who is very un-self-serving and accepts the opportunity to go and cover the American tradition of Groundhog Day*, at the Groundhog Day Mecca in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Phil thinks that this kind of assignment is beneath him and makes Rita and their Cameraman Larry, played by Chris Elliott, miserable through out the assignment. Phil constantly complains about the quaint hunky-doorieness of the town, its people, and Groundhog Day itself. Phil is just an all-around mean person.

On his first day, his alarm awakens him to Sonny and Cher’s “I’ve Got You Babe”. He finds the Bead and Breakfast he is staying at, not to his lofty standards. He is rude to not just Rita and Larry, but to every town person he meets. And finally he does a really terrible job covering the Groundhog Day Event. So as they are about to leave Punxsutawney, a record snow storm snows them in and Phil is forced to stay one more night, or so he thinks…

He awakes in the morning to Sonny and Cher’s “I’ve Got You Babe” again, only not just that but the radio DJs are saying what seem to be the same things as yesterday. He shrugs this off as just a case of déjà-vu, and sets out on his way to leave town. Only everyone is acting like TODAY is Groundhog Day, and they are saying and doing the exact same things as they were doing what Phil thought was the day before. Now Phil thinks that he is going crazy.

What has happened to Phil was that he was forced to live the same day over and over again until he could finally learn how to live his life as a decent human being. Only he doesn’t know this. The movie is full of hilarious scenes of Phil trying to get out of this loop anyway he can and how he has learned to cope with this gift/curse. What do you think ends up happening to Phil and Rita on this infinite Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day is an old, silly tradition of predicting the coming of spring. On February 2^nd, 6 weeks before the start of spring, people turn to a prognosticating groundhog to see if spring will come on time or if winter will be longer this year. As legend has it, if the ground hog sees his shadow and becomes scared, winter will be longer than normal. But if he doesn’t become scared, spring will start as per usual. Of course there is no scientific evidence to support this—it’s just a fun way to spend the time in the long winter days.　
  Groundhog Day is not a holiday, nor is it talked about much outside of that day. But, without fail, on February 2^nd the weather man on the news will mention the outcome of the groundhog and his shadow. I have never personally been to a Groundhog Day celebration and honestly don’t know if there are any in Iowa. So it is very rare that a movie would center on this small of an event.
